Newport, known locally as the Sunshine Town, is in central Sullivan County and serves as the County Seat. Newport was incorporated in 1761 and became an important town in the area due to its success in farming and manufacturing, powered by the Sugar River. Today, the small, friendly town is well-known for maple sugar and apple orchards, as well as its three historic covered bridges. Newport has a lot to offer residents and visitors – beautiful historic homes, farmers markets, craft fairs, trails, four seasons of recreational activities, and more.
