Rail Trail Rendezvous: A Community Milestone for Discover Sugar River Region

On October 12th, Discover Sugar River Region held its first-ever Rail Trail Rendezvous, an event that marked a historic moment for our region. It was the first official event to take full advantage of the beautiful historic Sugar River Recreational Rail Trail, which connects Claremont and Newport. With its scenic paths and two of the region’s ten historic covered bridges, the trail provided the perfect setting for a day of outdoor adventure, celebration, and community spirit.

Uniting Two Towns Through One Trail

The main concept of the Rail Trail Rendezvous was simple: “meet in the middle.”

Participants were encouraged to make their way from either Claremont or Newport to Protectworth Brewing, located conveniently between the two towns. One determined family had three young children making their way on the trail, all on their own bikes and ready for a fun ride.  Whether walking, running, biking, or riding ATVs, people from both sides of the region converged on this shared trail, celebrating not only the event but the connectivity of the towns.

The trail offers multiple options for recreation in the warmer months, accommodating walkers, runners, cyclists, e-bikers, ATVs, and even horseback riders! Participants starting from Newport’s Rec Center had about a 5-mile journey to the brewery, while those from Claremont’s Community Center covered roughly 6 miles. ATV riders kicked off from the Claremont Washington Street trailhead, a mile closer to the destination. It was thrilling to see a diverse mix of participants—ATV riders, cyclists, runners, and walkers—all sharing the trail with respect and enjoyment.

A Respectful Community of Trail Users

One of the most inspiring aspects of the day was the shared respect everyone showed for each other on the trail. With so many different modes of transportation—from foot traffic to motorized vehicles—there was not a single incident. This speaks volumes about our community’s commitment to trail etiquette and making our trail network a safe and enjoyable space for all. Seeing ATV riders, bicyclists, e-bicyclists, runners, and walkers all using the same path in harmony is a testament to the shared value we place on our outdoor spaces.

The Celebration at Protectworth Brewing

After hours of fresh air and adventure, the celebration began at Protectworth Brewing. As participants rolled in, they were met with cheers from a lively crowd, energizing them after the final challenging hill leading up to the brewery. It was especially rewarding knowing that after all the effort, delicious food and drinks were waiting.

Protectworth was alive with activity—live music, food trucks, yard games, and more. The brewery hosts popular local food trucks like 603, Pizza Hero Bus, and Top Dog Concessions. Yard games were scattered around, making it a family-friendly atmosphere where kids and adults could relax and play.

The live band, Better than Broken, took center stage, playing a great mix of “dad rock” hits and adding their own unique flair. The music set the perfect backdrop for the festivities. Sunshine, good tunes, and the perfect fall weather for an outdoor event.

A Team Effort: Thank You Rail Trail Rendezvous Partners and Sponsors

The success of the Rail Trail Rendezvous wouldn’t have been possible without the dedication of several organizations. The Discover Sugar River Region Events Committee, along with the Claremont and Newport Parks and Recreation Departments, worked tirelessly to plan and coordinate this event. Special thanks go to Protectworth Brewing for being the perfect host location, and for working hand-in-hand with our teams to ensure everything ran smoothly.

Of course, we also owe a huge thank you to our sponsors. Claremont Financial Services made it possible to bring Better than Broken to the stage, entertaining the crowd throughout the day. Our hydration was provided by BeMobile and Mount Sunapee Resort, who sponsored the water stations along the trail. Their support kept everyone energized and hydrated during the journey.

Speaking of being a part of the team, we invite you to be part of the excitement! Our Events Committee will be developing new events for our community and visitors from across the region. These events aim not only bring people together but also support local businesses by bringing in visitors from neighboring counties who love to spend their time (and dollars!) right here in the Sugar River Region. Join us in shaping the future of these events. Get involved, share your ideas, and help us build something great for our community!

A New Tradition in the Making

The first-ever Rail Trail Rendezvous was a tremendous success. It’s clear that this event has the potential to become a beloved tradition in the Sugar River Region. The day brought people together, showcased the beauty of our rail trail, and celebrated the spirit of our towns. We can’t wait to see what next year’s event will bring! We hope to see even more of you out there, exploring the trail, and connecting with your community.
