Mountain Biking in the Sugar River Region: Trails for Every Rider

March 26, 2026

Mountain biking is a passion in the Sugar River Region of western New Hampshire, where locally built trails, varied terrain, and a strong riding community have helped put the region on the map.

Mountain Biking at Arrowhead Recreation Area

The region’s standout adventure hub is Arrowhead Recreation Area in Claremont, home to a growing mountain biking network maintained by the team behind The Wheel House Bike Shop. Riders come for technical climbs, steep descents, and “loamy” singletrack, and they stay for the friendly community that lingers after the ride ends.

Arrowhead’s reputation has reached far beyond New Hampshire. After hosting a qualifying race for the Enduro World Championship in 2021, the trail system gained national attention and put Claremont on the map for serious riders. The courses are known for being challenging and spectator-friendly. Check out 2026 race dates here.

More Trails, More Ways to Ride

Within minutes, riders can connect to the Sugar River Rail Trail for a long, flat ride, or head to nearby Moody Park for beginner and intermediate terrain. A short drive opens up even more options, including French’s Ledges in Plainfield, Newport Town Forest, Cornish Town Forest, and Mount Sunapee Resort, which offers a lift-served bike park and rentals. Just across the Connecticut River, Mount Ascutney adds even more variety for those looking to expand their ride.
