From quiet trails and ponds to harbor patios, bakeries, and New England history, here’s how to spend an easygoing early summer weekend exploring the Sugar River Region.
A Perfect Early Summer Weekend in the Sugar River Region
Early summer is a beautiful time to explore western New Hampshire. Cool mornings give way to warm afternoons, farmstands begin to fill with fresh goods, and lakes, trails, downtowns, and outdoor patios come alive for the season. Whether you’re looking for outdoor adventure or a quiet lakeside reset, the Sugar River Region offers an easygoing summer escape with plenty to discover along the way.
Choose from lodging options throughout the region, from lakeside inns to self-catering cottages and suites. Once you’ve settled in, ease into the evening with dinner at a local restaurant. Try the popular Blue Canoe in Sunapee Harbor or The Old Courthouse in Newport, or visit Protectworth Brewing for local brews and excellent pizza or Hoptimystic Brewing for beer, wine, and flatbreads or plates to share from its craft kitchen.

Saturday: Coffee, Trails, and Relaxing by the Water
Start Saturday slowly with coffee and pastries from one of the region’s local bakeries or cafés. Whether you stop at The Bend at Sugar River in Sunapee, Stacy’s in Sunapee Harbor, Crux & Crumb in Charlestown, or another favorite local spot, early summer mornings are made for lingering a little longer before heading out to explore.
Early summer is one of the best times to hike in the Sugar River Region. Choose a trail from our Hiking Challenge to enjoy uncrowded paths and satisfying views. Once you’ve returned to your car, stop at a nearby farmstand or general store to gather picnic supplies and local treats for the afternoon or head straight for ice cream!
As temperatures rise, head for the water. Spend the afternoon swimming at Mount Sunapee State Park or paddle the quiet ponds of Pillsbury State Park, where beautiful little islands and rocks make for great exploring. Canoe and kayak rentals are available. For a cold drink or snack, you’ll find a great general store in the town of Washington, just up the road.
Sunday: Start Slow and Enjoy One More Adventure
On Sunday, sleep in, enjoy coffee at your lodging, and take your time before heading out for one more experience before the drive home.
History lovers won’t want to miss The Fort at No. 4 in Charlestown, where special summer events, demonstrations, and the riverside setting bring colonial New England history to life.
Saint-Gaudens National Historical Park is another essential stop and features outdoor concerts on Sunday afternoons. Or fit in one more hike, paddle, or small-town stop before heading home.
