Silver Mountain

Recreation, Hiking, Hiking ChallengeSilver Mountain, Lempster, NH 03605, USA

A short climb with a big reward, the Silver Mountain Trail is one of the region’s most satisfying quick climbs. Beginning off South Road in Lempster within the Society for the Protection of New Hampshire Forests’ Ashuelot River Headwaters Forest, the yellow-blazed trail winds through quiet woods of pine, hemlock, and fern groves before rising steadily toward open ledges.

At just over a mile to the summit, the route is approachable for many hikers, climbing gradually along an old road before narrowing into a forest path studded with roots and moss. As the trees begin to thin, patches of exposed rock hint that the summit is near.

The reward is a broad, open ledge with sweeping views. On clear days, the Green Mountains of Vermont stretch across the western horizon, while Mount Ascutney and the Monadnock region appear in the distance. Look closely and you may even spot the quartz that gives Silver Mountain its name.
