Gunnison Lake: Ruth LeClair Memorial Trail
A gentle loop around the water makes the Ruth LeClair Memorial Trail one of the Sugar River Region’s most peaceful walks. Beginning at the parking area at the end of Gunnison Lake Access Road in Goshen, this easy trail circles the shoreline of Gunnison Lake—affectionately known by locals as the “Goshen Ocean.” The path winds through quiet woods of hemlock, maple, and beech, passing old stone walls and fern-filled forest before dipping back toward the lake again and again. At just under three miles with minimal elevation gain, the trail offers a relaxed outing perfect for stretching your legs, walking the dog, or lingering along the water’s edge. Along the way, bog bridges cross small streams, benches invite you to pause, and open viewpoints reveal glimpses across the lake toward Mount Sunapee. Do note that in early spring the trail can be very muddy. Created in 1983 as part of a watershed protection project, Gunnison Lake has become a beloved local spot for walking, swimming, paddling, birdwatching, and quiet time by the water.
