French's Ledges Trailhead
A climb that builds to a wide-open reward, the French’s Ledges Trail leads to one of the region’s most expansive viewpoints. Following the red-blazed route through a network of conserved forestland, the trail rises steadily before a short scramble brings you to the bald summit ledges, where sweeping views stretch across the Croydon and Grantham Mountains, Mount Ascutney, and the village of Meriden below.
Along the way, a mix of red-, yellow-, and blue-blazed trails offers options for shorter routes and longer loops, inviting you to shape the hike to your day. The surrounding forest is rich with life—home to deer, birds, and other wildlife—and offers a quiet, immersive experience in every season.
The final approach is steep and narrow, but brief, and well worth it for the open rock and far-reaching views at the top. In winter, the broader trail network transforms into a groomed cross-country ski system.
Look for the trailhead at the far back right side of the Plainfield Elementary School parking lot.

DanielGreat spots and a nice hike! It's an easy hike to the rocks at the end and the view is very nice. My 2 year old was abke to walk the entire way to the rocks and then I had to pick her up the last bit.

Mark AdamsI've been hiking French's for about 30 years now, it has gained some lovely upgrades to the trail system and markings but still keeps the quiet, small single tracks and beautiful views. Easy hike with just a slightly moderate pitch below the summit.

Tom LordGreat place to hike! Lots of wild life (deer, porcupine, frogs) and the view from the ledges was awesome, definitely will be back frequently. Signs can be a bit tricky so I'd recommend checking out the trail map and trail color codes in advance.

Diesel GreenI only have visited once but enjoyed the solitude with my dog for the short hike. Bring water, bug spray, and pay attention to the map. It's easy to get turned around by the loops intersecting.
