Historic Pier Covered Railroad Bridge
The Pier Bridge is one of only five covered railroad bridges remaining in New Hampshire. At 217 feet, the Pier Bridge is the longest surviving covered railroad bridge in the world. It was named for the center pier that supports it. Its clearance of more than 21 feet was built to accommodate locomotive steam engines. It is sometimes called Chandler Bridge because Chandler Station was a former railroad depot down the line from this bridge and the area was home to Chandler's Mill. .

Kim Varney ChandlerState of New Hampshire Covered Bridge No. 57. At 228', the Pier Bridge in Newport is the longest surviving covered railroad bridge in the world. Samuel Pinsley purchased the line in 1954. Passenger service ended in 1955, and the last freight train rolled through the Pier Bridge on September 5, 1977. Seemingly annoyed by any costly preservation efforts, Pinsly threatened to tear down both bridges. By 1978, the rails were removed. The state of New Hampshire eventually purchased the right-of-way in the mid-1980s. The property is now part of the Sugar River Recreational Rail Trail, a nine-and-a-half-mile trail from Newport to Claremont managed by the Trails Bureau in the Department of Natural and Cultural Resources.

Mike ProvencherStopped here while checking out the Wright covered bridge. Parking is at the end of a gate and is limited. Its about a .25 mile walk to the bridge along the sugar river rail trail. Neat bridge and glad to get it checked off my list.
